Terry Ulick There is no such thing. If you have to struggle and try, you’re grasping a straws. Writers I know let it flow out. No thinking about it. No crafting. You either have it all written inside and are just transcribing at the keyboard or you’re fabricating. Guess which is the real deal? Famous authors who’ve claimed writers block? I think those were the drunks and and screwed-up ones. I understand crafting and getting stuck on details. Walking away for a while is good, but the story is there or it isn’t. Again, hard line stuff!
Terry Ulick When someone you know actually reads your book. Other than that, nothing much.
Terry Ulick Writers write. People who talk about writing talk about writing really never do. Even then, it has to be an internally-generated work. If you’re taking advice from anyone, even me, you’re probably not a writer. Writers don’t need advice. Publishers — meaning ones who give advances and pay the costs, all know this. It’s how they weed out the good writers. I want to hear “Here’s my book. Don’t change a word,” not “I was hoping you could help me.” New writers hate when I share this. I understand, but if you’re hiring a plumber, you don’t want one who need advice and support. Thinking writing is different than that is a clue I look for.
Terry Ulick I’ve owned a publishing company since 1968 so helping new authors get past the “I’m writing a book” phase and actually write it and get off of social media. So, publishing others work. Me, I have been writing a book about vampires in Wales. I have a tagline for it: “Beware His Kilt.” I like writing in other languages and time periods so all I know is that it’s pretty X-rated.
Terry Ulick I’m a writer and always have been. It’s no big deal. I don’t need to be inspired to write. It pours out of me. I don’t really think about it. I read them later and ask “Who wrote this?”
Terry Ulick A near death experience and an amazing life all came together and I read it later and so many events — large and small — are there. I would say that the books (series of four) are my life lessons, about wonderful lovers and the gift of being alive when I should have died when I was seven. It’s a “thank you.”
