I'm happy to say writer's block has never been problem. After three decades as a professional writer in the advertising business, putting myself in front of a keyboard is enough to get me going. I may not always be ready for crafting dialog or a scene. In those instances I work on backstory or plot development. The hardest part for me is finding time to write.

Writing is a unique creative experience. People who read your work share their minds with you for hours at a time. Few other art forms give a creative person that privilege. Hearing from readers and getting their perspectives on your work is probably the most satisfying part of a long and lonely process.

Write. Write. Write. Then re-write what you've written. Once you have a complete work that you are proud of, get a professional editor to improve it. Next, find an agent who believes in your work. You can do this online, through the mail or at a writers' conference. I recommend the latter. After all this, expect to be rejected. There is one thing all published writers have in common: persistence.

My fifth novel is at the story arc stage. I usually fully plot my novels beforehand, then select the character through whom each scene will be told. I don't want to say more about the novel at this stage except that it will be a Medieval political thriller.

After three decades as a professional writer, I just sit down at the keyboard and go to work. Finding the time is the hardest part. If I'm not inspired to write a scene, I will work on plot details or back story. The key for me is putting something down. Violating that blank page is enough.

My most recent book, The Skinny Years, was one I'd wanted to write since college. The novel is a coming-of-age story based on characters and experiences from my childhood in Miami during the turbulent 1960s. Some forty years later, I finished the book.
