Marsha Hinds "Look out behind you!"
"HELP MEEEEEE!" (horrific screams)
Marsha Hinds When I was a little girl, my class was taken to a petting zoo. There was a sign near the horse pen that warned against touching the horses because they bite. Being intrepid and feeling rebellious, I remember approaching one of the horses and stretching up my hand to touch it.

Then I was in back of my class line, walking away.

But I can't recall what happened between those two moments! I don't remember snatching my hand away or running to catch up to the group. I don't remember if I actually touched the horse or whether it had lunged for me. I can't remember anything! It was as if there was a blip of time carved out from those two moments in my memory. It's a mystery that has plagued me on rare occasions throughout my life.

Marsha Hinds For the book on which I'm currently working, it was an idea that had been wandering through my mind for some time. I just thought I'd stir in more romance, the way I will add bacon to someone else's cookie recipe.
Marsha Hinds Books, movies, random conversations, odd sightings, tv shows, clothing, animals, sunsets, rocks, accidental wounds, flowers, etc. Anything and everything.
Marsha Hinds Top secret. It's fanfiction anyway and I can't publish it without permission unless I want to be sued.
Marsha Hinds It depends what your goals are. If you write because you simply can't help it, because there's something inside you struggling to be set down on paper, because you feel you have a story that needs to be told, then by all means, strive for it. It will be long, tiring, thankless work. You will submit your beloved manuscript to various places only to be informed that it's "not quite what we're looking for" and face rejection at every turn.

Persevere nonetheless. J. K. Rowling's initial manuscript was rejected several times before her books were accepted and I'll bet that all of those people who turned her away are gnashing their teeth with rage and self-loathing at their mistake.

On the other hand, if you're in this for the fame, glory and money, just drop it. You're betting off starting a rock band.
Marsha Hinds That's being able to brag about it at parties! No, seriously, it's more like having a child. You labor over it, fret over it, worry about what you've put into it and whether other people will see the beauty of it that you do. Then you send it into the world and wait anxiously to see how it will do.

Wait a minute. None of that sounds good at all! It just sounds like a case for sleepless nights and prematurely gray hair. Forget it; stick with my first answer. ;)
Marsha Hinds Being a veteran of Nanowrimo (if you don't know what this is, look it up), I simply sit at a keyboard or use pen and paper and start writing. It doesn't matter whether what you write is good, bad or spectacularly awful. It's like panning for gold. A great deal of what you'll find will be dross. But once you start digging through it, you're sure to come up with a few nuggets of true gold.
