I listen. I look. I smell, taste and feel. I think about what I have perceived. Then I write.

Currently swamped with trying to find ways to sell my forthcoming book of short stories. When I hit some solid ground, hope to resume work on a novel started last year.

If you are writing, you are no longer an 'aspiring writer'. You ARE a writer. Enjoy yourself. Don't stop. Keep trying to write even better work. 'Success' is irrelevant. If it happens, great. If it doesn't, keep trying for as long as you want to.

That sometimes elusive feeling that you have just written something really well. Reading it over to yourself. Reading it aloud. A total buzz.

Although I have experienced periods when it has been difficult to maintain my output as a writer, for various reasons, I can't say that I have ever personally experienced 'writer's block'. One might be stuck, unable to make progress with a particular project, but it seems to me there are always things to write about if you want to. In those 'stuck' situations I look for creative diversions - pick up some other unfinished project, write poems or memoirs or essays, whatever. Get back to the feeling that writing is fun. Usually, by then, something is developing in my brain at a subconscious or unconscious level as regards the problem I'm stuck on. Or the other activity itself leads me back to the primary project, with a changed perspective.

The book (still forthcoming) is a book of short stories, so there was no single 'idea' other than that they would all start from a word, term or phrase whose meaning I reinvented. For readers who'd like to know more about this, can I point them to the first 6 entries of my blog (which can be reached by a link from this page) where I have written about it in some detail?
