Michael Connor When I was travelling around southern Africa, there was a woman I would come in contact with frequently, who was normally a very cheerful person. One day we met and she had become visibly troubled and did not want to speak. Enquiries of her friend elicited only that the worried demeanour was caused by the news that the date for her ‘cleansing' had been set. Any further request for information was pushed aside. Asking around regarding the meaning of the ‘cleansing’ term I slowly discovered the truth. I knew this to be the basis of a story, but it took me a number of years to figure out how best to tell it.
