I edit other people's work now and it frees me up to read anything I want. Trying to slowly get my money's worth out of my English degree, I read a Shakespeare play each year. I got around to Richard III last year and it sent me on a crusade to find out as much as I can about the 15th century monarchy. I've jumped into the Philippa Gregory books, my wife has almost the whole set. I also plan to dig into Catch-22 (it is 2022, after all), Stingray Afternoons, John Adams, Little Fires Everywhere, When Tears Have Voice, 1920: The Year of Six Presidents, and even some books on baseball!

There once was a place where people ignored books--unless they decided to burn them--and stared at their phones every waking second. And they didn't realize what was happening until it was too late.

The hours. They are long and neverending when there is a deadline, but I love being able to shift everything to a certain time of day that works for me, rather than a boss standing over you who insists on having it their way.

Keep your day job! The field of writing is constantly winnowed down and it is very hard to make a dollar at it, or to often make people understand why a grown person could think of it as a career. I love Goodreads because the people here love to read--just like I do. I may have to explain why reading MY book is important, but I don't have to tell them why reading ANY book is important.

I wrote Out of a Dog's Mouth in the early 2000s when I had a puppy and while my dream job in sports publishing was going down the tubes as our company was running dry. It felt like therapy at first; then it felt like a story I really wanted to tell. I always wondered how my dogs saw things and what motivated them--besides food. Many of the incidents from the 1960s on actually happened to my family, though the last chapter--like the first--was a product of my imagination. I've always had a dog (or two), usually mutts. And I decided to donate part of the proceeds will go to animal shelters.

I recently published Out of a Dog's Mouth, a novel about a family's dogs telling the story of a family from the 1930 to the 2000s. I published it under the name McNally Berry. If you want to know why, ask me!
