American Bombshell is based on family stories of my mother's early life; married at seventeen and whisked out of a bombed-out Britain by a glamourous American pilot.
They say write about what you know, but fictionalising the lives of people you know is fraught with emotional as well as dramatic issues. As the book is quite intense, and pulls no punches regarding war, sex or love, it was a demanding but ulitmately uplifting thing to write.
