I don't know if I was ever "inspired." It was just something I've always done. I couldn't imagine doing anything else.

Mountain Killer is really a homage to the old fashioned "mystery western" that was once a staple of B movies. I think the first movie I ever saw in a "theater" was a drive-in screening of Five Card Stud (look it up -- great movie) when I was barely out of infancy. Similar vibe.
The next Tom Mix book, Savage Mesa, goes for something completely different. It's an ensemble piece and Tom is one of many protagonists. Think of those wonderful disaster movies of the 70s, like The Poseidon Adventure, and it's a similar story transplanted out West.
