I usually wake up each morning with a line or two of something I want to jot down, often the beginning of the haiku. The urgency to get it down before I forget it pushes me out of bed and I'm off and writing. Also, the photographs I take suggest interesting poetry and prose, and they are often included.

When I do it right, writing has several best things. On one hand, it's therapeutic, as it helps clean out the system, resolves inner conflicts, and gets one to accept what's actually going on, rather than evading or avoiding what may be uncomfortable. Not everything written has to be published –having a personal journal can accomplish a lot of this. But going public and accepting yourself in public is another beautiful side of written expression. People are forced to deal with the the real you. On the other hand, writing is a way of creating the prose and poetry that's canned be just as powerful as paintings on canvas and sculpture in stone. It leaves a sense of accomplishment.

Writer's block generally occurs when I try to write it right, that is edit at the same time I'm writing, rather than getting it out. The antidote is relatively simple– I just right whatever's in my mind, whatever I'm saying to myself at the moment and inevitably it will track back to what I really need to say and probably say it much better, less belabored and less stilted that if I try to get it perfect from the get-go.
