It’s usually a pretty vague glimmer, like suppose this happened… or what if… and then, if a setting and a couple of characters emerge from that thought, it might be something I can turn into a story. Even though I don’t get new ideas often, I always make a quick note in case I forget them.

Writing under pressure is no fun… though if you’re a professional writer I guess you have to find a way to cope with it. But if you write mainly for pleasure, as a hobby, then you can just stop writing until you feel ready to start again… Stories don’t go away…
