Trudee Romanek I'm working on a second novel right now. The original inspiration came from a tour of Boldt Castle in the Thousand Islands that my family took many years ago. I'd always thought it would make a neat setting for a story. But when I sat down to work on it, I suddenly realized that it was the situation of the people living on this river — with Canada on one side, US on the other — that interested me more. I learned some other things about the region and I already had a character in my head. When I put all those influences together, something interesting came out. (I hope!) I think I mention the castle in passing, but the story is about something else entirely. The story comes from the people.
Trudee Romanek The best thing? I have to pick just one? For me, I think the best thing is all of the new things I learn in the process of researching a story. I adore learning new things and writing gives me a reason to do so. That's the sort of underlying "best thing" about being a writer for me, but another aspect runs a close second. That is the more in-the-moment best thing of discovering a new piece of the story you're working on, a twist or resolution that's been there all along. Those moments of elated discovery are something very special.
