George Devault From former New York City firefighter Dennis Smith, author of the best-selling "Report From Engine Co. 82." He was the first to put a thoroughly human face on career firefighters in the big city.

"Fire Call!" explores the little-known world of volunteer firefighters, who now account for 69 percent of the firefighters in the United States. It's a weird world where daily life -- work, family, meals or sleep -- stops the second there's a fire call. Most people take firefighters for granted. They never stop to think about the fire calls or those who respond when someone calls 911.

The fire call may be flaming tractor-trailers on the interstate loaded with an explosive cargo. A man swept into a drain pipe during a hurricane. An airplane crash at a shopping mall. The floor may be burning out from under you. The man who set the fire is still inside. And he has a gun! You don't.

Meanwhile, your boss wonders why you're late for work.

Or ... your usually calm, cool and collected wife (she's a saint for putting up with me) suddenly starts worrying, big-time. "He's been gone a long time. I don't have a good feeling about this call." Then the fire chief drives up to the house ...

Thank you, Dennis!
George Devault Never had a problem with "writer's block," as such. I've been fortunate to always have good raw material. The challenge has been finding the right "voice" and organizing everything to make sense out of 30 years of what sometimes seemed like insanity.
George Devault A sequel, because one of the first things a fan said after reading "Fire Call!" was ... "I can't wait for a second book." Working title, "The Next Fire Call."

Having responded to more than 5,000 fire calls over 30 years as a volunteer firefighter, there is still a lot more to tell about what our volunteers really do. Most people just don't have a clue.
