Matt Luttrell I write whatever I can, even if I know that it's the wrong choice for that point in the story or for those characters. Then, days later, I'll suddenly realize my mistake and the right thing will come to me. It's usually on a bike ride or in the shower. It's much easier to improve on something that's already been written than it is to stare at an empty screen.
Matt Luttrell I think the best ideas stem from boredom. Before covid hit, I was working full time as a guide, talking with strangers and telling stories for eight hours a day. After covid, the only work I could get was as a bus driver at an oil rig. For eight hours a day I would be stuck in my own thoughts, with no stereo in the bus and no conversation to be had. Back in my camp room I'd watch endless documentaries and YouTube shows about space and physics. Slowly, the idea for River Jumping came to me, and I wrote down my ideas in a notebook between bus stops. If I hadn't been so bored, I don't know if the ideas ever would have come.
