Joshua Hedges Hearing a really good story always inspires me. It doesn't have to be a novel, or even the written word. Inspiration could come from a weird experience running errands. A movie. A play. Be receptive and aware of what is around you because your best stories are the ones you can personally relate to.
Joshua Hedges Writers blocks are generally writers putting too much pressure on themselves to produce. Write. Do a writing prompt. Just write even if it stinks, comb through it and find the gems, then rewrite.
Joshua Hedges Back in 2005, Marked was designed to be a sort of Harry Potter/Narnia novel written to get YA readers interested in an alternate world where lost civilizations were thriving past their due date on Earth. Through the years, after a lot of editing and rewriting, the battle scenes got a bit intense and re-imagining fantasy tropes started becoming as strong as the concept as lost civilizations. Marked evolved into the finished product, so I couldn't point to a specific idea that created the novel.
