It can honestly come from anywhere. I could be eating cereal and my mind will go "Ohhh, here's a groovy idea about a small town with serial killers" (Kerwall Town) or, I could be walking down an old NYC suburb, where I used to live and it'll (my brain) say to me "Ah, what would it be like if there was an Alien being kept in this neighbourhood?"
