Ruth F. Stevens Make time to write, and go for it! Don’t do what I did: I put off trying my hand at creative writing until I retired from my day job in public relations and advertising. Eager to make up for lost time, I’ve written two plays and three novels since then. It’s been fun (well, sometimes) and rewarding, but I wish now that I hadn’t delayed the process for so many years.
Ruth F. Stevens From the time my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease until her death five years later, I often found myself trading war stories and sharing sympathetic reflections with many others who, like me, had close family members afflicted with this tragic illness. These shared recollections were what inspired me to write a stage play and later my debut novel titled Stage Seven.

Stage Seven depicts how characters from three generations cope with Alzheimer’s, giving it resonance to people of all ages. Though the book tackles a difficult topic, I’ve included comic and romantic elements to lighten the tone. I hope the story can help readers learn more about this disease and try to regard it with a perspective that is bittersweet rather than bitter. With about six million cases of Alzheimer’s in the U.S., it’s a subject that unfortunately is relevant to far too many people today.
