Kate Stuart Not gonna lie, the best thing about being a writer is probably that I get to daydream and count it as part of my work process. Though this does throw off my sleep schedule a bit...
Kate Stuart I've got a lot of academic books on my to-read list this year, particularly those that discuss authorship and contemporary book culture. Outside of this, however, my Kindle and Audible account are full of books that I'm planning to work my way through! I'm working my way through R. F. Kuang's Poppy War series, Tomi Adeyemi's Legacy of Orïsha series, and the monster that is The Count of Monte Cristo audiobook right now (because why not juggle many books at once?). I'm also excited about a number of books coming in 2021, including Garth Nix's Terciel and Elinor, The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna, and so many others. Basically, if I could get some sort of Benjamin's Watch-type deal, I'd read everything I could get my hands on.
Kate Stuart If I have writer's block, it's usually because there's something wrong in whatever I'm writing. In my head, I compare it to my (very limited) experience writing code - one mis-typed line and the thing can get entirely thrown off. If it's a small break, listening to music and pacing around my room helps. Bigger breaks unfortunately take more time (and usually lots of pushing forward despite the issue) before the 'aha' moment comes and I work out what needs fixing. Hence the character that was supposed to die in Shifting Sands being given a reprieve.
Kate Stuart While my ideal scenario would be some kind of world-hopping adventure, I guess I would have to choose Talia from Mary Hoffman's Stravaganza series. Most of the other book worlds I love have a lot of danger and I'm not very brave. Though if I could stay in the Clayr's from Garth Nix's Abhorsen series and not venture elsewhere...
