Shawna Rodrigues I am constantly losing things.
Lots of mystery as to where they end up--
definitely not enough intrigue for a plot.
The protagonist in the novel I am currently working on does find things that belonged to her mother; that start to unravel the past.
So perhaps one day one of my lost items can add to someone else's intriguing plot one! (What do the initials on that ring mean...?)
Shawna Rodrigues Realize that every naysayer is projecting their own fears. They are telling you it isn't possible because they don't believe in themselves enough to think it possible.
Listen to the advice, the guidance, the wise sages who cross your paths with constructive guidance and clues for the path; but the ones who tell you it can't be done-that it is a waste of time or it isn't possible; that is their fears-don't let them become yours.
Shawna Rodrigues The feeling when you write the final words of a story; especially a novel.
A little bit of awe-that you managed to break through the other side.
A little bit of celebration-these characters and their journey now have life.
A little bit of fear-now they will be out in the world for everyone else to judge.
A little bit of hope-that they will touch someone, connect to someone, and make an impact.
Shawna Rodrigues I go down a rabbit hole of research about one characteristic of my characters (what countries would be most interesting for that Peace Corps trip- what kind of scholarship could she get)... which doesn't do anything to resolve writer's block!!
On second thought-that is probably how I create writer's block!

Clearing my head and change of scenery usually helps me get in the flow. Most people have to write in the same space every time - I try to have multiple options and if one doesn't work - on to the next.
Standing desk?
Couch?
Coffee shop?
Park?
Shawna Rodrigues Inspiration isn’t hard for me, it just needs space.
Our world and lives are so full and move so fast that it is hard to find space.
I feel most inspired when I am traveling, which has made finishing a novel in a pandemic especially challenging for me.
When I get away from the stressors and pressures of life, the words are there; the stories are there, I can hear the voice of my creative side which has always beckoned to me.
Shawna Rodrigues I believe that the best inspiration comes from actual life.
Many of the characters and situations that occur in this book are pieces and fragments of lived experiences and of people I know.
One of the first comments I got back from a reader was about how much they could relate to the story and how easy it was to connect to the characters.
Their roots are in reality - flaws and all.
