Gary H. James The idea for the most recent book came to me in around 2005 when I was fairly new to my life as a gay man and I was struggling. It felt really unfair that I now had to come out to everyone and so I began to write my story in the hope that it would educate straight people as to the journey many gay people go through.
What I didn't realise until later was this was all part of my journey to self-acceptance and I was helping myself to come to terms with being gay.
Gary H. James I'm currently promoting my coming out memoir Beyond the Closet and also starting to mull over ideas for my second book. Can't decide which genre it will be in but it'll definitely be a fiction book this time around. I've challenged myself to get it out before the end of the year so really need to hone the idea and get started soon.
Gary H. James My book came from a need to explain to people what coming out feels like but with hindsight I would have approached it differently if I was starting afresh now.
My advice would be to almost start at the end point and ask yourself, What is it I want to achieve by sharing this story? Once you know that you can figure out if your book should be fiction or non-fiction, fit into one specific genre or not, be written in a certain format etc. It really is worth putting the research in at the beginning so that you give your book the best chance at hitting whatever goals you're hoping for.
Gary H. James It gives me a much needed creative outlet and of course you get to be the master of whichever characters you decide to create.
Gary H. James I am having a little of that at the moment as I try to forge the idea for my second book. I've challenged myself to write and publish that this year. Perhaps a lofty ambition considering Beyond the Closet took my over 15 years.
I'm just giving myself time and plan to get the whiteboard out and start to brainstorm. Eventually something good will present itself I'm sure.
Oh and have a pad and pen by your bed as often lying in bed at night you can have some of your best ideas.
Gary H. James I ran to the fridge and when I opened it, my heart stopped. We were out of wine!!!!!
