R.T. Lund One of the story lines in THE GHOST is about a wealthy man with advanced kidney disease who manipulates his dialysis nurse (by dating her and ultimately proposing marriage) to get her adult son (who matches his rare blood type) to donate one of his kidneys. Once the rich guy has a successful transplant of the young man's kidney, he breaks off the engagement and abandons both the nurse and her son. Ultimately, she sues him but, unfortunately, never gets any satisfaction. A lawsuit with this fact situation was reported in Duluth, Minnesota. I incorporated some of the background and ideas in THE GHOST.
R.T. Lund Both of my parents were orphans who never knew their fathers. My mother grew up in Germany during Hitler’s rise to power and WWII. Her mother worked as a bookkeeper for her father’s company; they were never married. Shortly after she was born, the Nazi’s commandeered one of his factories to make war machinery. He left Germany and became a courier for the French underground until he was captured and executed around 1940. At about the same time, when my mom was about six, her mother was taken to a “sanitarium” and my mom was placed in an orphanage in the town of Arolson. Less than a year later, she was told that her mom had died of “natural causes”.
