Write every day, and study the greats. If you are really just starting, find someone you admire and break down their books. It's style, characters, how action and plot merge with character. Really study it, write down your observations. You will notice things that aren't in writing handbooks and it will be specific to your writing ambitions.

I hunt through books looking for new experiences, worlds, and ideas. Writing, when it's flowing, provides the same sense of awe when I get to live in an alternate universe of ideas, if only for a moment.

If its a big picture question on the book, I tend to take time away from it until I have the space to really tackle it in my life. If its a daily writing session moment, I use Cold Turkey Writer, an app that essentially turns your computer into a typewriter. I wake up really early to write, so there is literally nothing else to do, and it usually takes only a few minutes before I get going.

Steinbeck's East of Eden is my absolute favorite book, and I'd travel to Salinas Valley at the turn of the 20th century to meet the Hamiltons. Or I'd head to Isla Nublar, before the shit hit the fan. And do a behind the scenes tour of Jurassic Park, muttering behind Hammond, "you don't know what I know..."

I had a lot of catch up to do on some periphery hard science fiction books on my list this summer — books on my shelf I wanted to get through. But they ended up being on the shelf, because I wasn't that into them. And the result is that I missed out on some more immersive experiences. So as fall comes, I am going to get lost into some literary classics.
