Annabel Chown You can lose yourself in it it & get into a flow state.
Annabel Chown Morning pages (see Julia Cameron's 'The Artist's Way for more on this method) are brilliant for getting unstuck - you basically write 3 pages of stream of consciousness first thing in the morning.

I am unafraid of REALLY bad first drafts. For me, it's a process of refinement, so as long as I have something down, however crude, I know I can work with it.
Annabel Chown Write! It doesn't have to be everyday or for a set amount of hours. But you do have to commit to it as a practice, & have some degree of regularity to doing it. And read lots, so you are soaking up lots of great prose, and also learning what does & doesn't work for you as a reader.
Annabel Chown I observe the world (be it a beautiful building, or an overheard conversation), observe my feelings. There is so much going on, if we only take the time to see it and feel it. And I scribble notes.
Annabel Chown I'm in the very early stages of a second memoir, about birth & death!
Annabel Chown Out of the blue, at 31, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. My busy life as a young, single London architect crashed to a halt, as I entered several months of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Cancer was a harsh place to land in, but also a strangely interesting one, so far removed from my day-to-day reality of site meetings, construction drawings, rushed trips to the gym, and Saturday night parties. Which is why I started writing about it.
