S.J. Butler If I have writer's block, I don't even try to. I tend to make lists and form ideas I might use at a later date. This tends to unblock the sink.
S.J. Butler Having someone say they loved your story and that they couldn't put it down.
S.J. Butler Grow a thick skin. Get used to rejection. Never give up. Never perceive a Literary Agent as God - though some of them (because of their influence) are pretty close. Remember: 'inspiration wears overalls' and if you really want it, you might just get there if you try.
S.J. Butler I'm currently working on a teenage, coming of age novel which centres on the Irish community in London. It's a new genre (I'm told) - something called Magic Realism. I call it gritty, adult, Harry Potter.

Even more so now having seen my novel escape the slush pile and make it to a three book deal with Accent/Headline.
S.J. Butler After years of submitting my work to Literary agents and getting nowhere. I decided to make a Literary agent my main character. It was definitely something that I was familiar with. Ultimately I've always been attracted the idea of a story within a story. In this instance it worked very well being that the protagonist was the one who would receive a manuscript in which he unwittingly had the leading role.
