The concrete asylum floor is cold under my bare feet as the orderly leads me to the recreation room and seats me in front of the TV. I try to turn away, but I'm too late, and I see that face -- orange and angry and self-satisfied. He's scolding, insulting others, accusing them of committing the acts that he committed himself; and I am committed here for life, committed to seeing that face forever on that TV, which is never turned off.

Whenever I sit down to write, I reread -- and edit -- the last few pages of the story that I'm working on, and then I just keep going. My goal is always to write 1500 words in any sitting -- even if I know I might not like some of it the next day. We grow as writers by writing.

Think about the stories that move you. Think about the elements that worked in those stories -- the characters, the plot, the story and character arcs. Then try to come up with a character and her/his/their character arc. Consider how YOU can move your reader the way your favorite stories have moved you.
