Ivan Lopez I think it's important to take breaks. When I hit a wall I'll put the story down for a day or two and let my mind wander. I find that taking a mental vacation will do wonders, just like taking a vacation from any job. Forcing myself to work on a story when I'm having a block typically ends in a weakly written product.
Ivan Lopez I'm currently working on a collection of short horror stories that are all connected by the fictional Florida county in which they take place. This county is part of the same universe that my first book, The Town Beyond the Trees, takes place. I'm excited to expand that universe!
Ivan Lopez Know when you're done with a book. You'll never publish if you're always editing. We're our own worst critics and there will always be something to add, but not every idea has to be a part of the same story. Placing all you've got in your first book will make it tough to stay consistent in your next ones. You want your readers to continue wanting more. Don't let them down.
