Ira Mathur The book has been within me perhaps since I was six when my grandmother was telling me stories that were already 600 years old . Writing this was an impulse of gathering up the past and saving it .I left India as a child and in the new world it was an act of remembering. So much was robbed of new world inhabitants in particular language and place and sense of being rooted . I saw that in the history of Trinidad and Tobago and saw how necessary it is for people to remember their origins. But there is much that is good about forgetting too. New world people don’t have atavistic hatreds over race and religion . There are squabbles but not hatreds . So I wrote of an Indian childhood and saw Trinidad anew guided by eyes that loved our new world .
