Write. Write all the time. Write everything. Observe everything around you. Read. Learn. Allow people to teach you things you think you'll never need. Actively seek out new experiences. Be an open conduit, because you never know what will come in handy later on or develop into a story.

For me, the characters start screaming in my mind. Whether it's a story or an image of what is happening, it begins with that. Usually, its when I'm in my car driving or right about to go to sleep.
