Mark Twain, not Goethe, introduced me to Goetz von Berlichingen, a “doughty warrior” who “found a deep joy in battle” a “sincerely religious man, hospitable, charitable to the poor, fearless in fight...” in his hilarious travelogue "A Tramp Abroad." I had to know more; but didn’t find anything- written in English or otherwise- so I wrote my own!
