Eric Butler I have two ways to deal with writer's block. I either take a day off and focus on other things, ignoring it and coming back the next day with a fresh outlook. The other is to tackle it head-on and just start writing. Sometimes I'll stay within the framework of what I'm working on but if it's a bad case, I will just start writing anything to get words on paper and hopefully after a bit it will break trough so I can pivot back to what I was originally working on.
Eric Butler I love that writing allows me to step into the lives of other people. Similiar to reading, except I get to nudge the characters in the directions I want them to go.
Eric Butler The most important one is to write as often as you can. Even if for just a few minutes, just sit down and write. Make sure you schedule time to do this especially while dealing with all the ins and outs of production. Also, find like-minded people to offer you help. Go to facebook, Reddit, or even a local writing group to get help and feedback.
Eric Butler I'm working on a novel about the Pope Lick Monster, a goatman from Kentucky. I plan on it being the first of a Kentucky horror trilogy. I have some dark fantasy horror in the works based on Red Riding Hood and a Van Helsing like story of vampire hunters.
Eric Butler Artwork can be a big help. My family or friends offer some inspiration as well. I've been keeping journals filled with ideas and stories to pull from since I was in college.
Eric Butler The Shadow Within was a work in progress over many years. Originally started over ten years ago, I hit a wall and shelved it. After endless encouragement from my wife to write, I decided to surprise her with a completed novel for Christmas. The only problem, it was October. I decided finishing the Shadow Within (titled Panic at the time) was the only chance I would have to complete the book in time. With a fresh perspective, I was able to fix all the issues and completed the book on December 24th. Of course, it wasn't exactly perfect so after another rewrite to the ending and endless hours of editing, I'm ready to share the book with everyone. I've been with these characters one way or another for about 15 years. Thay are almost like children to me now.
