My grandfather on my father's side died when my father was a teenager so I never knew him. My father was an only son, and I always believed that his father, an engineer from the Northumberland area of England was the same. My grandfather was orphaned and sent to live with his aunt's family near the Scottish border. However, a few years ago I attempted to trace my family tree. I discovered that my grandfather may have had a brother, who, with their father continued to live in the city of Newcastle.
While the splitting of working class families in such circumstances would not have been uncommon in those times (1890s), I find it strange that my father never mentioned it. Was it because of bitterness on his father's part.
(Perhaps something along the lines of a Catherine Cookson novel?).
