As my two nieces reached adulthood, it was clear that though they grew up on Hilton Head Island, just as their father and I had, the world they lived in was not at all the same. I wanted to share those earlier, special days with them.

Two wonderful things about writing this particular story of my early life on Hilton Head Island has been reconnecting with people from my past. I've been in contact with four women who were in the one-room school with me -- and there were never more than five students there! Another gratifying experience has been the help that other authors have given me.

Now, I'm onto Winter Reading. On my list are a number of other memoirs and writings about the Low Country and Atlantic Coastal areas: Jim Alberto's "Daufuskie Daze," "Cassandra King Conroy's "Tell Me a Story," and Will Harlan's "Untamed: the Wildest Woman in America ...." My other reading passion is books about East and Southern Africa. I'm not reading any right now. If you have suggestions, let me know!
