What a great question. I study unsolved historic crimes especially in Los Angeles, and I work in criminal law so my career could be a daily inspiration. LA has so many tragic mysteries that are unsolved. Literally, an entire generation was known for its missing women.
But my favorite is to take different mysteries from my life that intrigue me and piece them together, then overlap with my own spin, and add the fiction and magic.

Book 1 is the introduction to the main characters (the sisters) of the series. Books 2-5 have a continuing overarching plot line and would make more sense if read in order.
