It was honestly a combination of things, i was playing a computer game and thinking how cool World War 1 type mechs would be. Seeing as how that would be utterly ridiculous as a straight Alt history novel, i decided to cheat and move the setting of my story to Mars for the first global conflict on Mars.

I usually use brackets to circumvent writers block, if i realize i need a name for a person, place, piece of equipment i'll use brackets to denote where i had the block and move on ie [first name last name].
