They shaved her head with great care, collecting the strands in a bowl, she asked them why they treated her so gently and with such compassion and when they stroked her bald head and smiled she smiled back, such kind people, so thoughtful. In the night she awoke, feeling warm and content, something was being slipped around her neck, it felt so warm and soft, and then it began to tighten and choke and she suddenly realised that the noose was golden and smelt of her.

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, spoiler alert, all ride horses. One of their mounts is a little on the thin side, one has a bit of a fever, and another has anger management issues. They still need a stable to rest their weary hooves in and a stableboy to look after them. Now, the Four Horsemen are said to appear, as heralds, at the end of days, and if you take a look out of your window, it certainly appears as though those days are nigh, so what's stopping them? In my latest WIP, it is the role of the stableboy to convince the Horsemen that everything is not as bad as it seems or to sabotage their plans. If the Four Horsemen don't ride out then we, the people, have got a bit more time to get our act together. The boy will have to be able to spin a yarn, tell a lie, and think on his feet or it could be curtains for us all.
I'm trying to work out if the story should end badly for us or shows us how stupid we are to keep ignoring the facts, as I said it's just an idea at this stage.

I must have watched the film Time Bandits 50 times at least. There is a moment towards the end of the film when the hero and his friends are transported to the 'Time of Legends'. It is a place of wonder and danger, multiple stories that we know and love, are told there, sometimes they overlap and characters stumble into each other's worlds. I like that. It just about scrapes in as a fictional book world because the story was extended in a graphic novel. Sorry.

I am currently working on the 3rd DCI Judas Iscariot adventure. It's taking up a lot of my time as you would expect. I've had an idea for a secret, shady and rather unpleasant organisation for some time and I needed to find a story arc that was worthy of it. Another novella is in the works too. Did you know that Charles Dickens would often slip into the slums and the dark streets of London with burly minders in attendance so that he could see the criminal classes up close? I bet his minders could tell a story or two.
