Stephen Scarcliffe I grew up around the inner city areas on the north side of Edinburgh. Much of the book stems from personal experience within that world.
The idea came from a fictional short story I wrote about a broken down, washed up drug dealer that had just walked free from a 10-year prison sentence, trying to reclaim his place amongst a vicious underworld that had moved on without him and now saw him as a target rather than a threat.
After some inspiring feedback from Irvine Welsh, I decided to take the story right back to its very roots. 1980s Muirhouse Edinburgh at a time when the area is in the grips of an AIDS and Heroin epidemic, showing the transition into a new era, the 90s when ecstasy and rave culture explodes, through the eyes of 3 up and coming young criminals.
Stephen Scarcliffe Having the ability to escape to alternative realities when the daily grind becomes too much to bear.
Stephen Scarcliffe I am currently working on a novella about Ronnie Slater. Ronnie is a corrupt detective in RAGING, part 2 in The Chemical Estate series, The novella traces his origins as a beat cop, explores how he initially became corrupt and explains why he has such a vendetta against Dougie Donaldson.
