The disappearance of a man I knew back in the 1960s. Owner of a restaurant in my south side Chicago neighborhood, he had a young wife and a new baby when he vanished completely. He may have been connected to organized crime in Chicago. It's actually something I touch on in my work in progress, South Side Story.

That's a tough one, if you think about it. Most fictional worlds are beset with problems. If they start out as Paradise, they don't end that way. Disaster soon falls or all Hell breaks loose. Maybe a good choice would be the planet Mars described in Kim Stanley Robinson's series: Blue Mars or Green Mars, which does end up as unspoiled Paradise, terraformed and engineered, but better than at the beginning.

Await Your Reply, by Dan Chaon, picked up at a used book store a few years ago. Really great stuff I'm currently reading.
Upcoming: Middle Passage, by Charles Johnson and The Corrections, by Jonathon Franzen.

After the struggle and the writing, after the final touches are made -- actually having readers respond -- that's amazing!

Back in high school on the south side of Chicago, my buddy Bill Wise ran a coin shop that became our clubhouse, den and the launch pad for many an adventure. It has to be a novel, because no one would believe the truth.

Just about everything comes from some experience, however I might have to twist it into a story.

The Ghost of Jamie McVay appeared in the mist of Lincoln Marsh along the Prairie Path in DuPage County, west of Chicago. Or so it would seem.
