Cayce Osborne I feel like people have a notion that writers must shut themselves away in solitude to do their work. I find it's the opposite, actually. My ideas all stem from something or someone I've encountered out in the world. A stranger that catches my eye on the bus, the way my son plays with his toys, how I feel being a woman (and mom) in society. There's no better inspiration than experiencing the world.
Cayce Osborne There will be a moment when you lose faith in your work. When you look down and think: this is a pile of garbage and what am I even doing? At this point, whatever you do, don't stop. Power through. Finish the draft. Because you know what? First drafts are at least 75% crap. It gets reshaped and cut up and spliced back together. But in order to reach that stage, you have to finish. Don't look back. Don't waste time on worry. Just finish. You got this.
Cayce Osborne I'm trying to put other projects (short stories, household distractions) on hold so that I can concentrate on finishing my novel (my second)! I hope to set aside some alone time this winter/spring to get the first draft done.
