Ava Black Advice is so hard to give. I don't know that I can give advice, but I can share some information for you to use or toss as you see fit. Publishing is an incredibly difficult industry. The competition is fierce and most writers struggle for years to find recognition. The vast majority of writers work diligently to hone their craft, but never acquire literary representation or achieve their publishing goals. All of the failure and rejection will affect you in negative ways. It is a sad truth that nobody wants to share, but needs to be known. Often hard work is unrewarded and leaves the writer questioning why they write at all. This isn't inspirational, but if you haven't yet written a book, understanding this may help you release inhibitions so you write as if nobody is watching. That is the good stuff. That is the stuff that moves readers, which ultimately, is the writer's desire. Writing to please yourself is the highest standard that can be set. Anything that comes after that, awards, representation, best-selling works, is icing on the cake. Enjoy the process. Enjoy the achievement of finishing a novel. Be proud of yourself for completing a monumental undertaking. Believe that validation will never come from external sources, but from your own sense of accomplishment. Believe in yourself and your novel and be proud that you took the journey.
