Ru Pringle I'm currently in final edits of a SF novel called 'Surfers'. It's a sombre , fact-based story, featuring pace goats, terrifying zombie chickens, cockney alien assassins, demented war-veteran music producers ... Basically a big slice of reality.
Ru Pringle Don't do it! Unless (a) you get obsessively involved (as I do) with the busy contents of your own head, and writing it down is a kind of catharsis (b) you find writing easy and something you can do in your spare time, and/or (c) you have a singular degree of bloody-mindedness that's out of all proportion to the likely rewards involved.
Ru Pringle I can honestly say I've never really had it. My main problem has been editing, which I sometimes find borderline traumatising. It can be a lot of effort to motivate yourself to tweak and tweak one tiny passage until it's right. I have to try and ignore the bigger picture and how much time it's taking, and just concentrate on that one section. Otherwise I'd get overwhelmed.
Ru Pringle I've never really had a problem with inspiration: books keep spontaneously developing in my head. Writing for me is just writing down what's already playing like a film between my ears: almost a kind of exorcism. The part I find most difficult is editing, which take up around 90% of my time.
Ru Pringle Thinking about the repercussions of the kinds of social stresses which led to Brexit combined with the pressures of mass migration in response to the warming and drying of Europe and northern Africa.
