I don't know if there is ever a real answer to this question. Other people often enjoy things I don't understand, and I don't think they would be able to explain what draws them to it.
The best I can say is, I often feel inspired to write the thing I'm in the mood to read, but which doesn't seem to exist yet. Writing it is the next best thing, so I get to work.

I had written and produced a play called "The Writer's Lament." It shared a similar premise, but entirely different characters and plot. Of all my writings, it was the piece I always felt I could rebuild into something more.
A novel gave me license to do things I couldn't pull off on a stage, and it just worked better with the concept.

Currently, I am writing the sequel to Lost on a Page. It is entitled "Character Developments."

Enjoy writing.
Publishing is a long, twisting road full of delays and disappointments. It has a lot of excitement too, but the exciting bits are bright points interspersed in all the other parts. You can't take them without all the rest of it.
So, enjoy the writing for its own sake. Love the story you have to tell.

The writing. I love the art of a good story, and I enjoy seeing it all come together. I love the craft of writing, and that's why I do it.

I read! Non-fiction as often as not. Anything can be a springboard for creativity, and any writer should already be an established reader.
