While it is not an autobiography, my debut novel "Flygirl," was inspired by actual events. I started writing it over 20 years ago when I was in a bad work situation. The first 83 pages of the book sat until 2015, when I decided to finish the novel.

"Flygirl" is the first novel in a series. In Book #2, we find Tris with a bit of career anomie, struggling to work on her personal life. The book deals with a larger issue, which is how the aviation industry handles depression and mental illness.

Learn how. I used to think that novelists just sat down at their typewriters, or note pads, pecked out a novel from beginning to end and voila! I was so naive! It was not until I actually took novel writing courses at San Diego Writers, Ink. www.sandiegowriters.org that I realized there is technique to crafting a novel.

Sometimes I just need to take a break. I craft my work in my head, and occasionally I need my internal outline to catch up. That said, if I feel like I need to meet a writing commitment I've made to myself- such as a daily word target- I literally just search online for a prompt and start writing. Even if the prompt has nothing to do with my work, eventually I'm lead back to it.
