The last book I published, A Bloody Book, came to me from my own experiences of teaching kids who come from troubled backgrounds and difficult lives. The book took a dark turn because I was dealing with some dark issues personally. Indirectly, I got some of that raw emotion out onto the page.

I'm getting pretty close to completing another book of classroom stories much like, Our Kids: Building Relationships in the Classroom. I'm also in the process of taking notes on an idea for a new young adult fiction book.

Write what you love. Write the stories that you want to read. You can't possibly be the only person that likes the stories and ideas that you like. Write them and figure it all out later.

When I was in college, a writing professor told us to write no matter what. If you had nothing to write or felt as if you had nothing to say that day, then write that. I had journal pages that started with the line, "I have absolutely nothing to write about today." Sometimes I would whine on and on about my lack of ideas, but eventually something would happen on the page.
