I was working out, training for an upcoming hike, on the Mt. Kilimanjaro of subway staircases with my hiking buddy when the idea popped into my head to marry my two passions: writing and hiking and all they both meant to me.

If the juices aren't flowing, I'll read a good book about writing. Like Margot Livesey's "Hidden Machinery," Janet Burroway's "Writing Fiction," or Virginia Woolf's "Women and Writing." Other times, I'll find a favorite novel and become inspired by the wonderful writing in front of me. Working with a writer's group can also do the trick. Seeing other writers grow in skill is vastly encouraging.

It took me years to discover that momentum in writing can really move the project along. How I learned this was at a writer's retreat where for over 3 weeks I had nothing else to do but focus on the book. That trained me for having a consistent writing practice at home. I highly recommend finding an opportunity like this if you're able to spend the time.

Those moments when I find the perfect word or sentence. I'm still working on the perfect paragraph...

I go outside. I walk. Or hike, which is even better. It clears my head, and my soul; it fills up the creative well so I can go back at writing later.
