S.M. Thayer In early January 2016, I stared reading a boatload of psychological thrillers. It started with Paula Hawkins THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN, then Mary Kubica's THE GOOD GIRL, Peter Swanson's THE KIND WORTH KILLING, A.S.A Harrison's THE SILENT WIFE. Until then, I'd never read domestic suspense/psychological thrillers before but the genre enthralled me. I loved how the unlikable characters operated in these novels, the twisted and twisty bad choices. So on April 1, 2016 I started writing my own novel.

For my money, one of the best opening sections of a novel in any genre is Vanessa Diffenbaugh's THE LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS. So I started by riffing on that-- or at least that one of the characters fears being set afire.... From there, it pretty much flowed naturally. I set my characters on a path of bad decisions until something, well, bad inevitably was going to happen.
