It doesn't happen often. But sometimes taking an hour or two to work on something else, perhaps some physical work or being outside or running errands--it can help give the brain a short rest. Sometimes that is all that is needed. I would caution anyone however, not to get up and get away from the computer screen every time you aren't "feeling it." Sometimes you just have to make things happen when you write. You don't want to get in to the habit of taking a break very often. Otherwise, your productivity drops off dramatically.

It is rewarding to get to do something that I am good at. It is something I am comfortable doing, and it feels good to be in control of at least a part of my world. That's what I am doing when I write. It is not always easy. Sometimes it can be challenging. But it never seems much like work to me. It's what I like to do.

Write regularly, preferably every day. And write even when you don't feel like it. Hopefully, you will feel like it most days. And take time to read good authors. Learn from their style. It will enrich your own writing. And pay attention to what is going on in the world around you every day. There are always things to write about. Any event or any conversation can be a catalyst that sparks some inspiration within you.

I continue writing articles, and I already have enough to make another book like my first one. I've also started on a book about pro football during the years in which I was growing up. It will be something of a nostalgic look back at the game. I have several other possibilities running in the background of my mind as well. I'll never run out of ideas.

It's not hard. I'm usually motivated any time I sit down to write. And I'm often jotting down ideas in between writing sessions as well. Like anyone, however, I have had times when I'm not as motivated. When that happens I have to address it in one of two ways: (1) I just plow right on ahead. Usually if I force myself to write, something inspiring will happen eventually. (2) Sometimes I have to just take a little break; perhaps give my mind a rest. I have written long enough to know when I should force my way on through or when I should get away from the computer screen.

For many years I've written an insightful newspaper column that has been well-accepted. At different times, people would ask me, "Have you ever thought of putting all of this in to a book?"
So I did!
