Nancy Campbell I began the poems in 'Disko Bay' during a midwinter residency at Upernavik Museum in Greenland. I had been invited to Upernavik, an island on the northwest coast of Greenland, to write about its history and the present-day community but I hoped to record some observations on the wider Arctic environment too. However, the weather conditions were so extreme that winter I couldn’t walk much further than the hilltop cemetery, where coffins decorated with plastic wreaths were lined up in rows, waiting for the earth to unfreeze the following spring. The poems in the book respond both to my hopes and fears in this harsh environment, and to the important life lessons I learned from the islanders and the ancient objects in the museum.
Nancy Campbell I've just completed a year as the UK's Canal Laureate, working in partnership with the Canal & River Trust and The Poetry Society. This role required me to travel 2000 miles of waterways, writing poems about the people and places I encountered – a dream job for a kayaker. (Some of the completed projects can be found online at waterlines.org.uk)

Now I'm Literature Fellow at Internationales Künstlerhaus Villa Concordia in the beautiful city of Bamberg, Germany, until next spring. I'll be working on a new poetry collection, and reading my way through contemporary German literature in translation – recommendations very welcome!
