I have had LONG bouts of what I thought were writer's block. In fact, it was just my head telling me I couldn't or I shouldn't. . .because I've always written. Whether it was good or bad, little notes or whole essays, I've always written. I think that what we call writer's block is letting outside expectations get in the way of the voice of our truest self that is always speaking to and through us. When we stop listening to the old voices in our heads, our hearts are always writing us whole.

I think those of us who make sense of the world and our lives through reading and writing were born that way -- with a need for ideas as they come through words. But the best part of making the commitment to being a writer is being true to myself, and then getting to share the ideas that come through me with others!

I usually feel most inspired when I am moving -- walking, driving, hiking. I am one of those people who has to move to think. Ideas come and I feel sparked. Then when I sit down to write from that place, the words just flow onto the page.

By living it. By realizing I was lost and wondering what to do about that. I realized that the more I fought feeling the lost, the worse I felt. But the more I realized that feeling lost was actually a symptom of having lost my truest self, the freer I felt. I discovered The Way of Being Lost by living it and then making sense of what I was living by writing about it. In a way, I have been writing myself whole my whole life!

Writing, like pretty much everything else in life, is a practice. The more you do it, the more it flows. I try to write every day -- whether it's journaling, making notes, writing a paragraph or two on my next project, or blogging. When we invite our muse and grease the wheels of our creativity, the ideas begin to flow!
