Hi, Jo. It's a short story collection I unpublished a while ago.
If you drop me a line (tom at tomfowlerwrites dot com), I can send you a copy.

The initial idea came from a news story.
I modified it to fit the characters and the established world they inhabit.
It all leads to a very personally and professionally challenging case for C.T. Ferguson.

I'm going to take this to mean where ideas come from.
A lot of places. Sometimes, a story on the news. Others, an article I read. I've even gotten ideas from coworkers' presentations about their outside interest at work.
As a crime writer, there's always the "what if I added a dead body?" angle.

Interacting with readers. I personally read and answer every tweet, email, and Facebook post/message, and I'm happy to do it. Even when I'm a Professional Big-Timer, interacting with readers will be the best thing about being a writer.

Write. As much as you can. Find genres you like. Get inspired by the best writers in that genre, sit down, and write. While you're writing, realize that you're also learning. The first couple short stories you write will probably be terrible. Mine were. The first novel (or two) you write might be hot garbage. Mine was. Don't be discouraged. Learn. Improve. Hone your craft. Keep writing.

Long-term, I don't think there's such a thing as writer's block. There are specific days when the words don't come easily, however. I think the best way to get around that is to have good processes. Before you write, think about what you're going to write. What's going to happen in the scenes? Does a character die? What significant events happen? You don't need a big fancy outline, but a few sentences to clarify the ideas for yourself will go a long way.

Two things in different stages:
1) Reviewing editorial revisions for "The Mechanic," which will be the first book in a new thriller series.
2) The first draft of "Blood on Canvas," a C.T. Ferguson crime novella for a multi-author box set.
