Jean Constant Writing is a massive challenge for me. Whereas as a visual artist, a white canvas is all I need to start new work, approaching a white page with a pencil is enough to freeze and block my every thoughts even before I even start. To compensate that serious handicap, I copiously fill pages and pages with volume of material written on the topic I’m working on. When ready, I get back into it like an editor, cutting, pasting, rearranging sentences until I find my own voice, my own rhythm.
Jean Constant The pleasure of seeing clearly articulated on a piece of paper what was a stream of subconscious thought, brilliant to yourself but so hard to capture and commit to permanence.
Jean Constant We're often told that writing is a solitary effort. The more I write the less I agree with that! Yes the act of writing, squeezing out of your brain the raw material is for the writer to do alone. But be prepared to share your material with many and polish again and again what may be obvious to you but maybe not to other. Peer reviewing and editors are priceless in the completing of a meaningful, well-written book. As much as I believe one should stray true to himself and not be afraid to stand up for his or her ideas and even the way he expresses it, listening and collaborating will make you a better writer and at the end will benefit the reader too.
Jean Constant Preparing vol #9 and #10 of the Math-Art series. The first one will be a composite of the work I accumulated working for many years with Sangaku, a unique Japanese tradition dealing with Geometry visualization; the second one will have to do with pattern recognition inspired by the reputed Russian scientist M. Bongard. Language is sign and signs are an unending source of inspiration for visual and literary artists as well.
Jean Constant My writing is an additional layer of appreciation of the visual work I am creating and inspired by pure science and the beauty of our environment as in the Geometry of nature project that explores the geometry of 52 minerals in 365 illustrations. It is also a log of my progress, thought, and association coming to my mind while composing the artwork.
Jean Constant The Math-Art series was inspired by the work of great mathematicians, and the talent of engineers and programmers who made this complex universe visually accessible to us all.
