Inspiration comes from life plus your imagination. I'll think of dialogue my characters are having and write it down. Then an entire scene will come to mind that might move the plot forward. For me, memories fit into the story I'm telling as well. A scene from memory starts one way on the page and often change as the story evolves but the spark is often something from my past.

I'm writing the second and third books in a series.
In book two of the Lexi Fagan Murder Mystery Series, Free For All, office intrigue turns deadly as we find Lexi working as a receptionist at a San Francisco think tank. Also reappearing from book I is Detective Robert Reiger, who leads the investigation; he uses Lexi as his eyes and ears inside her office where suspects seem to multiply by the day.
In Sins of the Mother, the third book in the series, Lexi returns to her hometown of Ketchikan, Alaska, for her grandfather’s funeral. While there, she‘s forced to face the truth about her own parents’ untimely death 20 years earlier. As she digs for clues, Lexi starts questioning everything she thought she knew about herself and her family.

Don't give up. Keep writing and submitting. It may break your heart but you need thick skin to put yourself out there. I sent query letters to a lot of publishers and received beautifully written and kind rejections back. It actually encouraged me to keep going. You can always self publish as I did. It doesn't carry the stigma it once did and when you hit "publish" there's no feeling like it.

The best thing about writing is solving creative problems with words. You can write yourself out of a tight spot. It's like magic.

Give it a good sleep. For me, I will wake with an answer to a writing problem.

It was the Wild West all over again. And she had the corpse to prove it.

When I lived in San Francisco in the '80s there was a terrible fire at the old Jack Tar hotel on Van Ness Avenue. It sparked an idea, so to speak.
